PLIF (Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion)
What is PLIF?
This procedure is when the lower back is inserted with a cage made of either allograft bone or synthetic material directly into the disc space. The spine is approached through a 3-6 inch long incision in the midline of the back, and the left and right lower back muscles are stripped off the lamina on both sides of the back. The lamina is then removed which allows the doctor to view the nerve roots, trimming any of the facet joints to allow for space for the nerve roots to have room.
