Bone Grafting

What is Bone Grafting?

A bone graft is a surgical procedure used to fix problems with bones or joints. The procedure which is a transplantation of bone tissue, and works well in fixing bones that are damaged from trauma, or problem joints that have gradually gotten worse over time. A bone graft may fill a void where bone is absent or help provide structural stability.

The two most common types of bone grafts are:an allograft, which uses bone from a deceased donor or an autograft, which comes from a bone inside of your body, such as you ribs, hips, or wrist. The type of graft used depends on the type of injury your surgeon will be repairing.

Conditions that may need bone grafting include complex fractures that don’t heal well with initial treatment, and when a doctor feels it’s necessary to replace bone around surgically implanted devices such as joint replacements or screws
