What is a MCL Tear?

An MCL injury is a sprain or tear to the medial collateral ligament. The MCL is a band of tissue underneath the skin of your knee. It connects your thighbone to the bone of your lower leg, thus making it extremely vital to all sorts of movement. The MCL thus keeps the knee from bending inward. You can hurt your MCL during activities that involve bending, twisting, or a quick change of direction. Such examples would include soccer, football, skiing, among other quick activities that require you have to quick movements or sudden change in direction. or example, the MCL can be injured in football or soccer when the outside of the knee is hit.

What are the Symptoms of MCL Tear?

Common symptoms of MCL tear include:

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Several hours after you’ve injured your knee, the pain may gradually get worse
  • Possible bruising may be evident
